A History of Portsmouth Victoria Synchronised Swimming Club

The club was formed in 1979 as Portsmouth Victoria Synchronized Swimming and Water Polo Club. We have just celebrated 25 years of competitive swimming and the name of Portsmouth Victoria is known and respected nation-wide.

Since the start, the competition results have improved every year. Our first major achievement was in having two girls selected for the Hampshire Squad in 1981 and since that time we have had representatives in every Hampshire Squad.

At District level many Portsmouth girls have been chosen to swim for the Southern Counties.

By 1982 our swimmers were sufficiently qualified to enter the National Age Group competition. The entries and results of this competition have improved over the years and we have had National Age Group Champions in the 12 and under, 13/14 and 15/16/17 categories and this has led to many girls being invited to represent England in the Age Group Squads.

Continually improving results have led to Great Britain Junior and Senior Squad invitations.

At the end of 1997 at the National Championships Portsmouth swept the board - National figure champion, solo champion and duet champions and National junior figure, solo and duet champions.

Club members are no strangers to television having featured in Boredom Busters, Blue Peter, an interview with Toyah Wilcox and more recently were featured in The Sun (not page 3!) but to advertise Braun electronics.

We have been asked to swim for charities - Lord Mayor Treloar School, St. Anne's Nursing Home and Elizabeth Foundation for the Deaf.

Every few years we have a show to raise funds. The swimmers have been asked to put on displays for the Festival of Speed in Chichester and previously participated in a Portsmouth Players performance of "The Old Man of the Sea" which was staged at Victoria Swimming Centre.

Synchro skills polished at the Club have even enabled many of our girls to secure summer jobs at the Hippodrome Circus in Great Yarmouth, and they have been asked back year on year.
